# Logging in

Before using SAM, you may need to set up the local administrator account if you did not choose Active Directory for authentication. You will also need an account number, provided by Spectralink. After initial startup, SAM will continue to prompt for this information until entered. Afterward you may log into the system.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Your account number is critical to SAM setup**

Spectralink assigns a unique account number to each customer which is linked to your SAM license. If a different number is used to configure the SAM server and it is not the assigned number, the SAM license will fail and the entire server must be reinstalled.
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="info" %}
**SAM is designed for one administrator at a time**

If more than one administrator is logged into SAM, a collision of configuration parameters might occur.

If you are an administrator and making changes to SAM parameters and another administrator is also making changes in the same page, you will see a message like this: “New configuration changes: Click here to load settings”*.* Clicking will refresh the page with the other administrator’s settings, overwriting your changes, which you may enter again.
{% endhint %}

## Opening the SAM Browser Window

Enter the IP address that you set up for SAM in a Google Chrome browser window. Only the Google Chrome browser is supported. Use this format:

**https\://\[IP address or server name]/sam/**.

When Chrome security warnings appear, click the Advanced link and proceed to the SAM page. The warnings appear due to SAM using a self-signed certificate by default. To eliminate the warnings, install a certificate signed by your company’s root server or a public CA.

The first time you log into SAM, you will need to enter your account number. A local administrator account name and password may also be needed. Once you have entered the required information, you are ready to manage your Versity smartphones.

## Logging into SAM via Active Directory

SAM supports the use of Active Directory (AD) to authenticate. If you elected to use it, you were prompted for group information during set up. For access and permissions purposes, Active Directory supports three different levels of access for three distinct groups. Instruct your SAM users how to use SAM according to their permission levels.

* *Administrator Group:* can log into SAM with their AD credentials and change any setting or manage any phone.
* *User Group:* can only approve, reject, and delete managed phones; cannot change application settings for any phone.
* *Read Only:* can only view phone information and current application settings; all changes are blocked.

If you have an Active Directory SAM instance, an account number must be entered on your first access to the system. Enter the account number sent to your organization via e-mail from Spectralink.

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Obtain your Account Number from Spectralink**

Before installing the SAM server, obtain your Account Number from Spectralink. This number is essential for a secure installation, and final deployment cannot proceed without it. The Account Number is emailed to your designated recipient by Spectralink, along with other setup information. If you have any questions about this process, contact your Spectralink service representative.

DO NOT ENTER ANY RANDOM CODE OR NUMBER. If you do, your installation will be unusable with your issued licenses, because they are coded to your account number.
{% endhint %}

After you click **Create Account** there will be a brief delay while SAM initializes its database. After that you will only be prompted for your Active Directory credentials.

## Logging into SAM via Local Administrator Account

If you set up a standalone SAM instance, the first time you log into SAM you will need to enter your account number, an administrator account name, and a password. Enter the account number sent to your organization via e-mail from Spectralink. Your account name can include any alphanumeric characters except spaces. The same applies to your password but it can also include special characters.

| Field    | Allowed characters                                                                 | Disallowed characters         |
| -------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------- |
| Username | Alphanumeric a-z, A-Z, 0-9                                                         | Space “ “, Special characters |

On subsequent logins, you must enter the administrator account name and password that you created above. The login prompt looks the same.

If your SAM login session is inactive for 15 minutes, SAM will timeout the session and take you back to the login prompt again.

## Logout

## Logging in later

After SAM is configured and certificates and licenses have been added, the login window will display certificate and license information.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Certificate and License information**

Certificate and License Information is displayed on the right side of the window.

The Certificate Information “Is Valid” field will turn yellow when your certificate is 30 days from expiration or less. It will turn red after the certificate has expired.

The License(s) Information displays information about the type and usage of installed licenses.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.spectralink.net/amie-essentials/planning-and-installation/logging-in.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
