# Install the certificate

SAM installs a self-signed certificate by default. This certificate is used for encrypted interaction between the SAM server and its phones. It’s sufficient for small, trial, or non-production environments where security is not an absolute necessity.

Due to requirement changes in Android 10 (Spectralink Versity software R2.x) the rules for generating a certificate have changed slightly. SAM R1.5 software accounts for these changes. However, if you are upgrading from a prior version of SAM and adding or upgrading your Versity smartphones to Android 10 it will be necessary to renew your SAM certificate to meet these new requirements. The primary change in Android 10 relates to the common name (CN) and subject alternative name (SAN) and the values that need to be included. If your SAM server is utilizing a hostname, it is required that the hostname; in a fully qualified format, be included in the subject alternative name. If the SAM server is only utilizing an IP address without a configured hostname, then it will be unnecessary to regenerate your certificate as it will remain compatible with Android 10 smartphone. If you have questions or need assistance with this process, contact your Spectralink Technical Support Representative or Spectralink Certified Partner for assistance.

The self-signed certificate is also used for HTTPS access to the SAM web interface. Since most modern browsers warn about self-signed certificates and require the user to approve exceptions, Spectralink recommends that customers obtain a new certificate, signed by their own root CA or a public CA. SAM provides a mechanism to export a signing request (CSR) and then import the signed certificate (CRT) back into SAM (see the About SAM section for further info). This step should be done before deploying phones since all phones must use the same certificate to operate with SAM.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.spectralink.net/amie-essentials/planning-and-installation/install-certificate.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
