# The console

Every screen in AMIE sits inside the same frame: a header across the top with the group selector and your user menu, a sidebar down the left, and a few dialogs and messages that can appear over any screen. This page describes that frame; the pages for individual screens link back to it.

## Why this page matters

Three things decide what any one person sees in AMIE. The group selector in the header decides which part of the fleet most screens count over. The group your user was placed in decides which groups you can select at all. Your role decides which buttons work for you. Only the first can be changed from the screen. If two colleagues open the same screen and see different figures, or one of them finds a button grayed out or a link that opens **Device not found.**, the explanation is in [The group selector](#the-group-selector), [Which groups you can see](#which-groups-you-can-see) and [What you can do](#what-you-can-do) below.

## The header

From left to right: the Spectralink logo, the [group selector](#the-group-selector), and your [user menu](#your-user-menu).

## The group selector

The wide list in the middle of the header decides which part of your fleet most screens are showing. Almost every number in AMIE is counted within one group and every group beneath it, so the same screen shows different figures to two people who have different groups selected.

Your [Space](/amie-advanced/introduction/how-your-space-is-organized.md) — everything your organization has in AMIE — is organized as a tree of groups. A group can hold devices directly, and it can hold other groups. Take a Space laid out by geography:

```mermaid
flowchart TD
    US["US Region"]
    W["West Region"]
    E["East Region"]
    CA["California"]
    CO["Colorado"]
    FL["Florida"]
    GA["Georgia"]
    US --> W
    US --> E
    W --> CA
    W --> CO
    E --> FL
    E --> GA
```

Selecting a group selects everything below it as well. In this Space:

| If you select…  | The screens that [follow the selector](#which-screens-follow-the-selector) count…                                                                                          |
| --------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **US Region** | Every device in the Space: **California**, **Colorado**, **Florida** and **Georgia**, plus any device placed directly in **US Region**, **West Region** or **East Region** |
| **West Region** | **California** and **Colorado**, plus any device placed directly in **West Region**. Nothing from the East |
| **California** | Only devices placed in **California** |

A device belongs to exactly one group, so no device is counted twice when you select a parent group. Moving up the tree adds groups in; moving down leaves groups out. There is no way to select two branches at once. To compare **California** with **Florida**, look at each in turn, or select **US Region** and use the **Group** column on the [Devices inventory](/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/devices-inventory.md) to tell them apart.

### What the selector shows

The selector reads as a path from the top of [the tree you can see](#which-groups-you-can-see) down to the group you have selected — in the example, **US Region / West Region / California**. When you have selected the top of that tree, it shows just that one name: **US Region**.

### Choosing a group

Select it and a list drops down containing a **Search** box and your groups as a tree, fully expanded. Groups that contain other groups have an arrow beside them; select it to collapse or expand that branch. The selected group is highlighted.

Type in **Search** and the tree narrows to groups whose names contain what you typed, keeping their parent groups visible so you can see where each match sits. If nothing matches, the list reads **No groups found**.

Select a group and the list closes. Screens that follow the selector reload for that group and everything beneath it.

Your selection is kept on the browser you are using, not with your user profile: sign out and back in, or reload, and the same group is selected — and a colleague who signs in on the same browser starts with it too, if it is a group they can see. On a browser you have not used before, or if the remembered group is not one you can see, the selector starts at the top of the tree you can see.

### Which groups you can see

The tree in the selector is not the whole Space. It starts at the group your AMIE administrator placed your user in, and contains that group and everything beneath it — nothing above or beside it. In the tree under [The group selector](#the-group-selector), someone placed at **US Region** sees all seven groups. A colleague placed at **West Region** sees **West Region**, **California** and **Colorado**, and starts with **West Region** selected. They have no way to reach **East Region** or the groups beneath it; for them, the whole fleet on the **Dashboard** is the West. Two colleagues can therefore open the same screen and see different trees and different totals without either being wrong.

The same limit applies to links. A link to a device or battery identifies it by serial number, and anyone you send it to sees that device only if it sits in a group they can see. Otherwise the page reads **Device not found.** or **Battery not found.** — the same text as for a serial that does not exist. The [Devices inventory](/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/devices-inventory.md) and [Batteries inventory](/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/batteries-inventory.md) never list a device or battery outside your groups, so if a colleague can open a serial that you cannot, the device is in a group outside yours; nothing is wrong.

Which group your user is placed in cannot be changed in this console after the user is created. To see more of the Space, ask your AMIE administrator, who can request the change — see [Change someone's role or group](/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/roles-and-permissions.md#change-someones-role-or-group).

### Which screens follow the selector

Not every screen follows it, and the difference matters when numbers seem not to agree.

| Screen | Follows the selector? | What it counts instead |

On the **Dashboard**, [Managed Batteries](/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/dashboard.md#managed-batteries) and [the three call figures](/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/dashboard.md#the-three-call-figures) can read **0** for a group while [Managed Devices](/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/dashboard.md#managed-devices) shows its handsets. If that happens for a group you expect to have batteries, contact Spectralink support — see [Getting help](/amie-advanced/introduction/getting-help.md).

## Your user menu

At the right of the header: your name (or your email address if no name is set) with your role beneath it, and a circle with your initials. Select your name or the circle to open a menu with two items.

| Item           | What it does                                                                                                      |
| -------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **My Profile** | Opens your profile, where you can change your name, phone number, appearance (light, dark or system) and password |
| **Logout** | Signs you out and returns you to the sign-in screen |

## What you can do

What you can do in AMIE is set by your role, shown beneath your name in the [user menu](#your-user-menu). Your AMIE administrator sets it when your user is created, and it cannot be changed afterwards in this console — see [Change someone's role or group](/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/roles-and-permissions.md#change-someones-role-or-group).

Most buttons you are not permitted to use are shown grayed out rather than hidden — for example **Send Message** and the **Edit** button for notes on [Device details](/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/device-details.md), **Request Log Bundle** on [Log Bundles](/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/device-details/device-log-bundles.md), and **Add Group** and **Start Enrollment** under **Settings**. Hover over one and the pointer changes to a "not allowed" symbol; no explanation appears. Three places under **Settings** behave differently: the **Users** tab reads **Failed to load users.** and an **Access Denied** dialog appears; the **Licenses** tab opens to an **Access Denied** dialog and an empty tab; and the **Enrollment ID** on the **Group Details** tab reads **You don't have permission to view this**.

If an action your role does not allow is nonetheless started — by opening the **Users** or **Licenses** tab, or by pressing a button that was still enabled because your role was changed after you signed in — an **Access Denied** dialog appears and nothing is changed. What each role can do is listed on [Roles and permissions](/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/roles-and-permissions.md).

## The sidebar

The sidebar lists every area of AMIE under four headings, with **Dashboard** above them. The current area is highlighted.

| Heading            | Screens                                    |
| ------------------ | ------------------------------------------ |
| (none)             | **Dashboard**                              |
| **Assets**         | **Batteries**, **Devices**                 |
| **System Health** | **Alerts**, **Performance**, **Site View** |
| **Infra**          | **Sites**, **Access Points**               |
| **Administration** | **Settings**                               |

{% hint style="info" %}
Not yet available: \*\*Site View\*\*. Selecting it does not open a screen. \[GAP-nav-1]
{% endhint %}

Selecting **Devices** opens the **Overview** tab; selecting **Batteries** opens the **Inventory** tab. Selecting **Settings** opens the [Settings](/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/settings.md) tab, from which the [Groups](/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/settings/settings-groups.md), [Users](/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/settings/settings-users.md), [Licenses](/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/settings/settings-licenses.md) and [Group Details](/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/settings/settings-group-details.md) tabs are reached.

On a narrow screen — a phone or a small tablet window — the sidebar is replaced by a bar of five items along the bottom of the screen. Only the first, **Dashboard**, opens a screen; the other four do nothing yet, and two of them carry text that is not a screen name. The red dot on the **Alerts** item is decoration and does not mean there are new alerts. Use a wider window to reach the other screens.

{% hint style="info" %}
Not yet available: mobile navigation beyond \*\*Dashboard\*\*. \[GAP-nav-2]

## Dialogs and messages

Four things can appear over any screen.

| What appears | When | What to do |
| ------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| The sign-in screen | Your session has expired | Sign in again. You are returned to the screen you were on |
| An **Access Denied** dialog | You tried something your role does not allow | Select **OK**, press Escape, or click outside the dialog. Ask your AMIE administrator if you need that action — see [Roles and permissions](/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/roles-and-permissions.md) |
| An **Error** dialog | Something could not be loaded or saved. The dialog shows a short description and sometimes a number | Select **OK**, press Escape, or click outside the dialog, and retry. If it persists, quote the number to Spectralink support — see [Getting help](/amie-advanced/introduction/getting-help.md) |
| A brief message at the bottom right of the screen | An action succeeded or failed — for example **Message sent.** or **Notes updated.** | Nothing; it disappears after a few seconds, or select its **×** to dismiss it |

While a screen is loading, its figures show a dash (**—**) or a spinning icon. Nothing on any screen refreshes by itself: figures are calculated when the screen loads. Reload the page, select **Refresh** where a tab has one, or change the group to recalculate them.

## Signing out

Select **Logout** in the [user menu](#your-user-menu). Your group selection is kept on that browser — see [Choosing a group](#choosing-a-group) — and your appearance choice is kept with your user profile, so it follows you to any browser.

# Agent Instructions
This documentation is published with GitBook. GitBook is the documentation platform designed so that both humans and AI agents can read, navigate, and reason over technical content effectively. Learn more at gitbook.com.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.spectralink.net/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/the-console.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
