# Licenses

The **Licenses** tab of the [Settings](/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/settings.md) screen lists the licenses installed in your [Space](/amie-advanced/introduction/how-your-space-is-organized.md), with each one's term, size and status, and is where you add a license key or delete a license. To reach it, select **Settings** in the sidebar, then the **Licenses** tab.

## Why this screen matters

A handset reports to AMIE only while a license is assigned to it, and your Space's plan follows the licenses installed. When a new key arrives it is added here; when handsets stop reporting or the plan reads **essentials**, this tab shows whether a license has expired, how many handsets each license covers and how many are using it. The **Available Licenses** figure on the [Dashboard](/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/dashboard.md#available-licenses) summarizes the same list.

## Before you start

Requires the **Admin** or **Owner** role. For other roles the tab opens to an **Access Denied** dialog and stays empty — see [Roles and permissions](/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/roles-and-permissions.md).

The list shows every license in the Space; it does not follow the [group selector](/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/the-console.md#the-group-selector) in the header. Licenses belong to the Space, not to a group. How licenses reach handsets, and what happens when there are not enough, is on [Licensing](/amie-advanced/planning-and-installation/licensing.md).

## Screen layout

### The controls above the table

A search box reading **Search licenses...** until you type, a **Refresh** button that reloads the list, an **Export** button that downloads the list, **Delete Selected**, and **Add license**, which opens the dialog for adding a key. Each is described under [Controls](#controls).

### The table

One row per license, a checkbox in the first column and seven columns, described under [Columns](#columns). The list opens sorted by **Order Date**, newest first. Selecting a row does nothing beyond its checkbox.

With nothing to list the table reads **No licenses to display.** — no license has been added, or none matches your search. **Failed to load licenses.** means the list could not be fetched; select **Refresh**.

### The paging controls

Beneath the table: **Show** with a list of **10**, **25**, **50** and **100** rows per page (**25** when the tab opens); a note reading **Showing 1 to 3 of 3 licenses**; and **First**, **Previous**, **Next** and **Last**, with **Page 1 of 1** between them.

**From Date** and **To Date** are calendar dates and read the same in every time zone. Whether a license is **Active** today is judged on AMIE's date, not your browser's — see [Time and time zones](/amie-advanced/metrics-reference/time-and-time-zones.md).

## Common tasks

### Add a license

Requires the **Admin** or **Owner** role.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Select **Add license**. The **Add New License** dialog opens.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Paste the key from Spectralink's email into **License Key** — whole, with no spaces or line breaks around it.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Select **Add license** (**Cancel** closes the dialog without adding). The dialog closes, the table shows a spinning icon for a moment, a brief message reads **License added.** and the new license appears in the list. Handsets that were waiting for a license are assigned to it shortly afterwards and begin reporting — see [Licensing](/amie-advanced/planning-and-installation/licensing.md#how-licenses-reach-handsets).
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

If the key is refused, the dialog stays open and reads, in red:

| Message                                                                          | Meaning                                                                     |
| -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **The provided license key is invalid or corrupted.** | The key was not copied whole, or is not an AMIE license key |
| **This license key has already been installed.** | The key is already in the list |
| **This license's account number does not match your organization's account.** | The key was issued to a different customer. Contact Spectralink |
| **This license has already expired and cannot be installed.** | Its **To Date** has passed |
| **Unable to determine your organization context. Please refresh and try again.** | Reload the page and try again |
| **Failed to add license. Please try again.** | The request did not complete. Try again; if it repeats, contact Spectralink |

### Delete licenses

Requires the **Admin** or **Owner** role.

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
Check the box on each license to delete. **Delete Selected** becomes available.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Select **Delete Selected**. A dialog headed **Confirm Deletion** reads the number you checked, in the form **You are about to delete 2 license(s).**, and asks you to type **DELETE LICENSE** to confirm.
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
Type **DELETE LICENSE** and select **Delete** (**Cancel** keeps the licenses). The table shows a spinning icon while the licenses are removed, then a brief message gives the number removed, in the form **2 license(s) deleted.** The handsets that were assigned to a deleted license lose their license and stop reporting until another is assigned to them.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

If not every license could be removed, the message reads **1 license(s) deleted, 1 failed.** or **Failed to delete the selected license(s).** If it reads **Another license operation is in progress for this space. Please try again.**, another license change was under way at the same moment; try again.

## What to look for

* A license whose **To Date** is within the next month. Order its renewal now; when it expires, the handsets assigned to it stop reporting unless another license has room for them.
* **# of Device Licenses** with the allocated figure equal to the total on every **Active** row. Every one of its device licenses is assigned. A newly enrolled handset appears in the Devices [Inventory](/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/devices-inventory.md) as **Unlicensed** and does not report until you add a license.
* An **Expired** license still in the list. It covers nothing. Deleting it tidies the list and the **Available Licenses** figure on the [Dashboard](/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/dashboard.md#available-licenses).
* **Pending** on a license you expected to be in use. Its **From Date** is in the future; handsets are not assigned to it until then.
* **Plan** reading **essentials** on the [Settings](/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/settings.md#space-configuration) tab. No AMIE Advanced license is **Active** today.

## Metrics on this screen

* [Time and time zones](/amie-advanced/metrics-reference/time-and-time-zones.md) — **From Date** and **To Date** are calendar dates; **Order Date** is a displayed date in your browser's time zone; **Status** is judged on AMIE's date

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.spectralink.net/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/settings/settings-licenses.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
