# Licensing

AMIE comes in two forms, and the license installed in your [Space](/amie-advanced/introduction/how-your-space-is-organized.md) decides which one you see. AMIE Essentials simplifies app configuration and battery management. AMIE Advanced provides everything in AMIE Essentials plus device management and analytics. The features of each are compared on [Welcome to AMIE](/amie-advanced/introduction/welcome.md#amie-essentials-and-amie-advanced).

## What each license gives you

An **AMIE Essentials** license, whether entered at sign-up or added later under **Settings** on the **Licenses** tab, gives a console in which only the battery screens are available: [Batteries](/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/batteries-overview.md) and [Battery details](/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/battery-details.md).

An **AMIE Advanced** license gives the full console: devices, calls, networks and battery insights, and everything described under Using the platform.

## One plan at a time

Only one plan is active for a Space at a time, and AMIE Advanced takes precedence: a Space holding at least one AMIE Advanced license whose term includes today is on the Advanced plan. A Space whose only current licenses are AMIE Essentials, or that has no current license, is on the Essentials plan. When your licenses change, the plan follows; nobody sets it by hand.

Your plan is shown under **Settings** on the **Settings** tab, under **Space Configuration**, as **Plan**. The value reads **advanced** or **essentials**; **Unavailable** means the plan has not been calculated yet, which can happen briefly after signing up. See also [Plans](/amie-advanced/introduction/plans.md).

## How licenses are sold

Licenses for AMIE Advanced and AMIE Essentials are sold per handset per year, in one- and three-year terms. A single purchase covers a number of handsets. When a purchase is made, Spectralink emails the contact named on the order a license key. The first key creates your Space — see [Signing up](/amie-advanced/planning-and-installation/sign-up.md); later keys are added in the console.

The [Licenses](/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/settings/settings-licenses.md) tab describes the screen in full.

## How licenses reach handsets

A license covers a number of handsets. When a handset enrolls, AMIE assigns it to a current license with room left; when you add a license, AMIE assigns it to handsets that were waiting for one. A handset without a license appears in the console — the **Licensed** column on the [Devices inventory](/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/devices-inventory.md) reads **Unlicensed** — but does not report until a license is assigned to it. Keep enough current licenses for the handsets you deploy.

## Adding a license

Later keys are added under **Settings** on the **Licenses** tab, which opens only for the **Admin** and **Owner** roles. The steps, and what each rejection message means, are on [Add a license](/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/settings/settings-licenses.md#add-a-license).

## Reading the Licenses tab

The list shows one row per license: **From Date** and **To Date** (its term), **# of Device Licenses** (how many handsets it covers, followed by how many of those are in use — **50 (12 allocated)**), **License Type**, **Status** (**Active**; **Pending** before its start date; **Expired** after its end date), **Order Number** and **Order Date**. Select the checkbox on one or more rows and **Delete Selected** to remove licenses from the Space. A **Confirm Deletion** dialog opens; type **DELETE LICENSE** into it to enable **Delete**. If a brief message reads **Another license operation is in progress for this space. Please try again.**, another license change was under way at the same moment; try again.

The **Available Licenses** figure on the [Dashboard](/amie-advanced/using-the-platform/dashboard.md#available-licenses) counts only current licenses that already have at least one handset in the selected group assigned to them: the handsets they allow minus the handsets assigned. A license no handset has used yet is not counted, so a new Space with licenses but no handsets reads **0**.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.spectralink.net/amie-advanced/planning-and-installation/licensing.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
