# How AMIE works

AMIE has three parts: the **AMIE Agent** on each handset, the **AMIE cloud** that collects and analyzes what the handsets report, and the **console** you open in a web browser.

## From handset to console

Each Versity handset sends its diagnostic data over your Wi-Fi network and across the internet to the AMIE cloud, using the same secure connections a web browser uses. The cloud stores and analyzes it. The console reads from the cloud and presents it to you.

Nothing needs to run on your premises. AMIE Advanced needs no server or gateway of yours, and your network needs only to allow the handsets to reach the internet — no inbound connections and no port forwarding. Spectralink recommends keeping a firewall between your handsets and the internet in the normal way; only outbound rules are needed.

Open the console in Google Chrome. Other browsers are not supported.

## What the handsets report

The AMIE Agent reports diagnostic information about the handset.

| About       | For example                                                                          |
| ----------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| The battery | Charge level, charging state, cycle count, temperature, health, serial number |
| The device | Model, serial number, software version, storage use, extension and phone number |
| The network | Which access point and network it is connected to, signal strength, channel and band |
| Calls | When a call started and ended, its direction, packet loss, and its quality score |

The Agent does not capture call audio or the internal data of any app. What appears in the console about a handset is about the handset.

Separately, the console stores what you enter yourself to run your Space: user names and email addresses, site addresses and contacts, and any notes you add to a device.

## Security

* Data travels from the handsets to the cloud, and from the cloud to your browser, over encrypted connections.
* Data is encrypted where it is stored.
* Each handset must prove its identity to the cloud before anything it sends is accepted.
* Access to the console is by named user.

## Signing in

You sign in at **my.spectralink.net**. The first screen asks you to **Choose your sign-in method**:

| Option             | What happens                                                                                       |
| ------------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Password Login** | You enter your email address and password |
| **Email Code** | A one-time code is sent to your email address. Enter it and you are signed in — no password needed |

Whichever you choose, you are taken to a secure sign-in page to complete it and then returned to the console, at the page you were trying to reach.

### Your first sign-in

New users are invited by an administrator. The invitation email contains a verification code and takes you to **Set your password**: enter the code and choose a password of at least 12 characters that includes an uppercase letter, a lowercase letter, a number and one of the symbols `. ! @ # $ % ^ & *`. If the code has expired, or you enter it wrongly too many times, ask your administrator for a new invitation.

If your organization is new to AMIE, **Sign up** on the first sign-in screen starts the set-up described in [Signing up](/amie-advanced/planning-and-installation/sign-up.md).

### If you forget your password

Choose **Email Code** instead. It signs you in without your password. If you need the password itself reset, contact your administrator.

### Protection against misuse

After repeated wrong passwords, sign-in for that user is blocked for a short, increasing period and then clears on its own — nobody needs to unlock it. Signing in from a device the console has not seen before may ask you to confirm it is you.

Sessions expire after a period. When yours does, you are returned to the sign-in screen and, once signed in, taken back to where you were.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.spectralink.net/amie-advanced/introduction/how-it-works.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
